What we’ll do together

We begin with the story

Through photographs and stories, I’ll share the wider history of pottery in Oaxaca and southern Mexico, then bring us to Ixtlán: its mountains, red clay, open-air wood firings and the people who preserved and passed this knowledge down.

Then we shape

You’ll begin with freshly prepared clay. I’ll show you how to open it, raise the walls and shape a bowl, cup or another simple vessel.

After a short pause, we burnish

Once the clay is firmer, we’ll refine the curves, add the final details and burnish the surface with a stone until it begins to shine.

One piece, made by you

You’ll finish one piece and add your signature underneath. I’ll help you make the walls, rim and base strong enough for firing, but the final shape is yours.

After the workshop

Your piece will stay at Urban Artists to dry and be fired. I’ll email you everything you need to know before collection.

A few practical things

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope. I’ll have the clay, tools and everything else ready for you.

You don’t need to wear anything special either. Clay usually washes out easily. An apron is completely optional. Shorter nails make hand-building a little easier, but it’s not a requirement.

How much clay will I have, and how many pieces will I make?

You’ll work with around 400 g of clay to make one medium-sized piece during the workshop — for example, a generous cup, a bowl or another simple vessel you’d like to make. 

We’ll focus on that one piece from start to finish, so there’s plenty of time to shape it carefully, smooth its surface and burnish it well with a stone. By the end, you’ll know the whole process well enough to try it again afterwards.

What language is the workshop in?

The workshop is entirely in English. We begin with around 45 minutes of stories and context, followed by demonstrations and group instructions.

Your English doesn’t need to be perfect, but you do need to be able to follow the workshop without someone translating for you.

If you would need me, a friend or another participant to translate as we go, please don’t book a place for this workshop.

Can children join?

Mainly for adults. Children around 8–9+ can join with a parent or responsible adult if they enjoy focused, hands-on activities. Please book one ticket for each. Children must also be able to follow spoken English without relying on the adult to translate.

When will my piece be ready?

The pieces should be ready by the end of October.

Urban Artists is open for collection from 26–29 October and again from 2–5 November, from 17:30 to 19:30. If neither of those works for you, there’ll be one final chance to collect during their Christmas market on 12–13 December, from 10:00 to 16:00.

Please make sure one of these windows works before booking. I’ll email you once the pieces are ready and let you know if firing is delayed.

Can my piece be shipped?

Shipping isn’t included, and Urban Artists does not pack or ship pieces. If needed, please arrange collection and shipping independently.

What should I know about firing?

Small marks, colour changes, warping or cracks can happen during drying and firing; in rare cases, a piece may break. We’ll handle every piece carefully, but final results can’t be guaranteed.

Can I change or cancel my ticket?

Please book only if you are completely sure you can attend. Please don’t reserve a place “just in case” — once booked, your place should be treated as final. Cancelling close to the workshop may mean receiving little or no refund.

I travel specifically to run these workshops, with only a small number of places in each session, so last-minute cancellations are very difficult to replace.

You can ask to move to another session until 10 calendar days before your originally booked session, as long as another session has space and I confirm the change. You can also transfer your place to someone else at any time before the workshop.

If your plans change, please contact me as soon as possible. Any refund depends on the circumstances and is handled according to the Workshop Terms and Conditions and applicable law.

If you don’t attend your booked workshop and haven’t cancelled before it begins, your booking is treated as a no-show and no refund is normally due.
