Hi, I’m Iván.

I’m a Mexican-German ceramicist from Monterrey. Since 2022, I’ve led pottery workshops across Europe and Latin America, teaching every session myself.

During 2020 and 2021, I spent long periods in Ixtlán de Juárez, Oaxaca, learning from my teacher, Amelia Aquino (1927–2025), the last traditional potter of Ixtlán. I kept returning in the years that followed.

My time with Amelia changed the way I understood pottery. I began to see that a vessel is more than its form. It carries a way of working, a relationship to everyday life and the memory of the people who passed these gestures on. That understanding still shapes both my work and the way I teach.

I graduated from ESAD Toulon in France, where I also worked as a ceramics tutor from 2022 to 2024.

Today, I work with Innovando la Tradición and Rodolfo Pérez to support La Comalita.

Zapotec pottery workshops from Oaxaca, Mexico

In each workshop, you’ll shape your own piece entirely by hand, without a wheel. You’ll then burnish its surface with a smooth stone until it begins to shine. Along the way, I’ll share where this way of working comes from and how it continues today in Ixtlán de Juárez.
